Keeping up with the Dinosaurs
Directions:
Read the dinosaur facts below. Then, write True or False in the blanks before the sentences at the bottom of the page.
Paleontologists believe that the first true dinosaur evolved on Earth about 225 million years ago and became extinct or disappeared about 65 million years ago. All true dinosaurs were land-living creatures. The gigantic prehistoric sea creatures, such as ichthyosaurs, mosasaurs and plesiosaurs, were not really dinosaurs. Pterosaurs were not really dinosaurs either. They were flying reptiles that looked like lizards with wings.
The word dinosaur means “terrible lizard”, but dinosaurs were not lizards.
Modern science now links dinosaurs to birds. They are thought to be the closest relatives to the dinosaurs. Crocodiles are also thought to be more distant relatives of the dinosaurs. Scientists believe all animals and plants living on Earth today are descendants of creatures that lived when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
